Maintaining the Fire

don't cut trees down

Use what is around you, there should be plenty of dead wood on the forest floor. Never cut a tree down, even if it's dead. Many forms of wildlife could still be living in it.

burning fire

When your campfire is going strong, keep adding larger pieces of wood to it, just until it is the size you require.

no glass or plastics in the fire

Just burn the wood you have gathered, or items of paper rubbish. Please don't burn plastics or rubber, it's not good for the environment. Also never put aerosol cans, pressurized containers,
glass other types of cans on the fire. This will be dangerous and could explode, causing you or others harm.

manageable fire size

Remember to keep your campfire at a size that is manageable. You do not want the fire to get out of control. This would be very bad, as you could start a wildfire. Harming you, others and the wilderness.

Supervise kids and pets

If you have young children or/and animals in your group, they must be supervised. This is your responsibility.

extinguishing the fire carefully

When it is time to put out the fire, allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if not, put lots of water on the fire, until it is completely cooled down and it is just a soggy mess.
If you don't have enough water, bury the fire, first mix a shovel of dirt in the fire until it is completely extinguished. Then with your shovel, scrape any remaining sticks and logs to remove any hot or smoldering embers. Then pile on the dirt. When its cool, it's safe.

Your campfire is one of the best parts of being out in the wilderness, it keeps you warm and provides you the means to cook.

Remember it is your responsibility to maintain and extinguish it to prevent wildfires.
